Raphaël Guerreiro is a Portuguese professional soccer player who has represented, as a defender/midfielder, Stade Malherbe Caen B (2010-2012), Stade Malherbe Caen (2012-2013), and FC Lorient (2013-2016) in France; and Borussia Dortmund (2016-Present) in Germany. With Borussia Dortmund, he won the DFB-Pokal (the premier domestic knockout soccer competition in Germany) in the 2016-17 and 2020-21 seasons. The latter title was the club’s 5th such and made it the then 4th-most successful team in the competition. With the club, Raphaël also won the DFL Supercup in 2019. The trophy is annually decided by a one-off match played between the winners of the DFB-Pokal and the Bundesliga (the top tier of the German soccer league system) championship. It was the club’s 6th such title, making it the then 2nd-most successful team in the competition. At the international level, he represented Portugal at the under-21 tier before making his senior national debut in November 2014. He was a key member of the Portuguese squad that won the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) European Championship (also known as the UEFA Euro), the quadrennial international men’s soccer championship of Europe, for the first time in 2016. For his performances, he was included in the ‘UEFA Team of the Tournament’. With Portugal, Raphaël also won the 2018-19 edition of the UEFA Nations League, the inaugural season of a continental competition that involves the men’s national teams of the 55 members of the UEFA.

Born in Le Blanc-Mesnil, France, Raphaël started his youth career in 1999, as a 6-year-old, with a local amateur team. In 2005, he joined INF Clairefontaine, a French soccer center that specializes in training youngsters. It is one of the 13 elite academies located in and around France that are supervised by FFF (Fédération Française de Football), the governing body for the sport in the country.
In 2008, he joined the youth system of Stade Malherbe Caen, a French professional soccer team based in the city of Caen in Normandy, the northwesternmost of the 18 regions of France. Raphaël stayed in the system until 2012 but his senior career had already started in 2010 when he began representing Stade Malherbe Caen B, the reserve team of Stade Malherbe Caen.
In 2015, he was a part of the Portuguese squad that finished as the runner-up at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. For his performances, he was included in the ‘Team of the Tournament’.
In July 2016, Raphaël, and the rest of the members of the Portuguese squad that just won the UEFA European Championship for the first time, were honored with the ‘Commander of the Order of Merit’ award. It is the 3rd-highest honor in the Portuguese ‘Order of Merit’.
In 2017, he was a member of the Portuguese squad that competed in the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) Confederations Cup for the first time and finished in 3rd place. The 2017 edition was the 10th and last edition of the tournament that used to be contested by the continental champions of Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Oceania, and Europe, along with the current FIFA World Cup holder and the host nation. Between 2001 and 2017 (with an exception in 2003), the tournament was held in the country that would host the FIFA World Cup the following year.
In December 2022, in Portugal’s pre-quarterfinal stage match of the 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup, against Switzerland, Raphaël scored his team’s 4th goal in a massive 6-1 win. It was the 4th senior-level international goal of his career. The win meant that Portugal had reached the quarter-final stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2006.
